This high relief sculpture shows a standing female figure with her face turned slightly to the left. She wears sandals, a fringed mantle and a wide tunic, whose broad neckline uncovers her right shoulder. The pomegranate and the posy of leaves and berries held by the woman are an eighteenth-century addition.
The lack of original attributes makes difficult the identification of this figure. According to some scholars, the fringed mantle and the rosette shaped diadem typically worn by the priestesses of Isis, identify this figure with the province of Egypt.
Unlike from the other sculptures discovered near the Hadrianeum and preserved in the Capitoline Museums, the plinth on whose surface this figure was carved has been squared and reduced in thickness to be walled in Palazzo Odescalchi.
This series of personifications of Provinces of the Empire documents the change that occurred in Roman art in viewing the populations of the Empire. The monuments of the 1st century BC showed images of provinces subdued in triumph and prisoners, “Provinciae Captae”. The new ones represent the provinces as integral part, supports and guardians of the Empire, “Provinciae Piae Fideles”, participants with Rome itself in the general peace and prosperity guaranteed by the emperor to all his subjects.
