Das Bild Melanzios:
Madonna and Child with Saints Anne and Joachim

This wonderful painting of the Madonna and Child with Saints Anne and Joachim, restored by the Ohio Chapter of the Patrons of the Arts, is now located above the altar in the Chapel of the Governatorato. This altarpiece was painted by Francesco Melanzio in 1516. Melanzio represented the figures with his characteristic elegance and simplicity. The painting is divided into two levels: the earth level with the Saints Anne and Joachim and the heavenly level with two angels. The Virgin Mary is located in the center and she belongs to both levels and unifies them. The Child Jesus is looking at his Grandmother with a pomegranate in his hand, underlining the importance of the family. The figures are praying with the exception of the Virgin, who is looking at the viewer with a maternal gaze and invites the viewer into the composition.
Melanzio was greatly influenced by Perugino and by the Umbrian painting of that time (between the end of the 1400’s and the beginning of the 1500’s): the colors are refined and shining, highlighting each individual. The painting is signed and dated in the lower part “Franciscus M pinsit (..) M Falco".
