1564-2014 MICHELANGELO / Exhibitions - Musei Capitolini

On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s death, the exhibition held in the Capitoline Museums is an event that, through some crucial aspects of his poetics, traces the life and work of one of the greatest master of art. The exhibition is marked by a series of “contrasting” themes that aim to highlight the complexity of the works of this "universal artist." Besides the comparison between drawings, paintings, sculptures, and architectural models, the show also displays a selection of autographical writings, including letters and poems.

Vgl. Michelangelo

Michelangelo’s sculpture Brutus is the sole “bust” credited to the artist, a work originated to be a political commentary charged by his personal feelings and completed in 1540. A traditional bust composed of marble, it depicts the treasonous Roman senator who betrayed his leader and friend, the military dictator Julius Caeser, and supported his assassination; behind the senator’s smiling and regal face, Michelangelo loaded the visage with a sublime murderous intent for the purpose of maintaining justice and freedom.
The Brutus was an inspired later piece Michelangelo created as a commentary on the (lost) freedom of his chosen home Firenze (Florence). The statesman was intended as a symbol of freedom and those who uphold it, as Medici dictators had just returned from exile and reinstated themselves as the political masters of Florence; this caused Michelangelo deep chagrin, and although he could not openly oppose them his Brutus was a metaphorical disapproval of their stranglehold on the city. This sculpture is a bastion of Michelangelo’s resistance and one of his most bitter and conflicted commissions.
